Supporting the Exhibition: Yoshida – Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking in London

In November last year, the ARTIE studio was closed for about a week due to a training trip to London.
The purpose of the trip was to support a major exhibition held in London,
“Yoshida: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking.”

We were invited by artist Ayomi Yoshida, a printmaker we have worked with in the past.
At ARTIE, we assisted in the production of some works and helped with the deinstallation at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.

We first heard about this project in January 2024.
Since then, we had several meetings with Ayomi Yoshida to prepare for the exhibition, which was scheduled to open in June.
We supported her by scanning artworks and preparing digital data.

This exhibition began with an interesting discovery:
Ayomi Yoshida’s grandfather, Hiroshi Yoshida, a famous printmaker, had visited Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1900.
His signature was found in the museum’s guestbook by a staff member in 2023. It was rare to see a Japanese name there at that time.

Further research revealed that Hiroshi Yoshida was the first of three generations of printmakers in the Yoshida family.
This led to the idea of showcasing over 100 years of Japanese printmaking through the works of this unique family.
Ayomi Yoshida, the third-generation artist, created a special cherry blossom installation to close the exhibition.

The exhibition was a great success and its run was extended beyond the original schedule.
Many European visitors came to see it, showing strong interest in a new perspective on Japanese printmaking.

We traveled to London at the end of the exhibition and were kindly allowed to view the display an hour before opening.
At the end of the exhibition, we saw Ayomi’s cherry blossom installation bathed in light.
It made us feel as if we had suddenly been transported far from London to Japan.
The beauty and fleeting nature of cherry blossoms moved us deeply.

We are truly thankful to Ayomi Yoshida for letting us be part of this meaningful project.
As a printmaking studio, we felt incredibly proud to see Japanese print art capturing the hearts of so many people in Europe.
